The honest answer requires reading a specification most buyers never see.

The 20-second answer
The 6R35 is Seiko’s mid-range automatic: 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, hacking, hand-winding and a genuine 70-hour power reserve, fitted to the Alpinist, much of the Prospex diver line and upper Presage models. Its stated accuracy specification is +25 to -15 seconds per day — barely tighter than the entry-level NH35 — and its known weakness is positional variance: the same watch can gain twenty seconds in one resting position and lose fifteen in another, which makes averages deceptive and regulation genuinely difficult. A 6R35 running poorly is usually in spec, occasionally regulable, and sometimes a legitimate warranty case; knowing which is which saves both money and grief.
How to assess a 6R35
Measure before concluding. Most complaints and most reassurances are both made without data.
Confirm the family
Hacking, hand-winding, date, six-step sweep and a 70-hour reserve together identify a 6R35. Its 6R15 predecessor gives about 50 hours; the 4R/NH tier gives about 41.
The 70-hour test
Full wind, then let it sit dial-up. Still running just short of three days later is the family signature and rules out a tired mainspring.
Measure in positions
Rate it overnight dial-up, then crown-down, then crown-up. The spread between positions is the movement’s real story — expect it to be wide.
Wear-average over days
Three or four days against a reference while worn normally. This is the number that matters, and the number Seiko’s spec governs.
Check against +25/-15
Inside that band, Seiko considers the movement in specification — warranty service will typically measure, shrug and return it. Outside it, you have a case.
Rule out magnetism
A sudden large gain is the classic magnetisation symptom on any movement. Demagnetising is a five-minute fix and should precede any deeper conclusion.
What the 6R35 is and where it lives
Introduced in 2019 as the successor to the 6R15, the 6R35 is the engine of modern mid-range Seiko: the Alpinist family, a large share of the Prospex mechanical divers including the vintage-styled 62MAS and Willard reissues, and the upper end of Presage. The headline change from the 6R15 was reserve — 70 hours against roughly 50 — achieved with a higher-capacity mainspring, while jewels rose to 24 and the beat stayed at Seiko’s traditional 21,600 vibrations per hour.
Everything the entry tier finally gained is here too: hacking seconds, hand-winding, Diashock protection, day-free date at three. As a specification sheet it reads like a properly grown-up movement, and the 70-hour reserve is real, testable and genuinely useful — a weekend off the wrist leaves it running comfortably.
What the sheet also says, in the line nobody reads at the boutique, is +25 to -15 seconds per day. That is the accuracy Seiko promises. It is barely tighter than the NH35’s printed tolerance in the tier below, and it is the legal and practical answer to most of the complaints this movement generates: the watch is doing what its manufacturer said it would.
The gap is one of expectation management. Buyers reasonably assume a several-hundred-dollar watch times better than a hundred-dollar one; Seiko’s ladder instead spends the difference on reserve, finishing, cases and crystals, and holds tight regulation back for the 8L and Grand Seiko tiers. Whether that allocation is right is a matter of taste. That it is the allocation is simply a fact about the catalogue.
The positional variance problem, specifically
The complaint that fills the forums is not average rate but spread. A 6R35 can gain twenty seconds a day resting dial-up and lose fifteen crown-down — figures straight from owner reports — and both are true measurements of the same healthy movement. Positional variance of this size is the calibre’s documented character, and it has two practical consequences that catch owners out.
First, averages deceive. A watch that spends nights in a rate-cancelling position can look superb for weeks, then “break” when its owner starts leaving it in a different orientation. Nothing changed inside. Second, regulation struggles: a watchmaker zeroes the rate in one position and the spread simply re-expresses itself around the new centre — which is why owners report examples returning from regulation, sometimes twice, still behaving unpredictably. Reducing the spread itself is adjustment work at a level of effort the movement’s service economics rarely justify.
The judo move is to use the spread instead of fighting it. Measure your example overnight in each position — dial-up, dial-down, crown-up, crown-down — and you will find its personal map. Then park it each night in the position that offsets its daily wear. Owners routinely turn a +15 daily wearer into a net-zero watch with nothing but a consistent nightstand habit. It is free, it is reversible, and it is the single most effective 6R35 intervention available.
None of this excuses a genuinely bad example, and they exist — movements outside the printed band in normal wear, which are warranty cases and should be pursued as such, with written measurements. The point is narrower: a wide spread with a tolerable average is this movement being itself, and no amount of service will turn it into an 8L.
Fast, slow, or suddenly wrong: diagnosis order
Before any conclusion about the calibre, rule out the cheap causes. Magnetisation is first and most common: a wristwatch that suddenly gains minutes rather than seconds has almost always met a magnet — phone cases and bag clasps are the usual culprits — and a demagnetiser fixes it in minutes for pocket change. Any watchmaker will do it while you wait; hobbyist demagnetisers cost less than lunch.
Second, isolation: measure properly. A rate impression formed from glancing at the watch against a phone twice a week is worthless for diagnosis. Set it precisely against a reference, wear it normally, and record the daily delta for four or five days; then do the overnight positional map. Twenty minutes of actual data separates in-spec disappointment from genuine fault more reliably than any amount of forum polling.
Third, the honest escalation. Outside +25/-15 on wear-average: warranty or service, with your documentation attached — Seiko service centres measure against the spec and respond to numbers. Inside spec but intolerable: paid regulation targeted at your wearing pattern helps some examples and is a coin-flip on others, for the positional reasons above; a candid watchmaker will say exactly that before taking your money.
And throughout: resist the movement-swap reflex that solved everything in the 7S26 era. The 6R35 sits in watches whose value increasingly depends on originality, and an NH-swapped Alpinist has solved a timekeeping annoyance by deleting part of the watch’s identity. The 6R35’s problems are livable; the cure can be worse.
Is the 6R35 worth it? The tier question
Read the table honestly and the 6R35’s position is awkward. Against the tier below, its upgrades are the 29 extra hours and — in the watches it inhabits — better cases, dials and crystals; its printed accuracy barely improves. Against the Swiss movement at comparable watch prices, it loses the regulation contest outright: Swatch Group ships the Powermatic 80 factory-set to a target the 6R35’s spec does not even attempt.
The defence is that nobody buys an Alpinist for its rate statistics. Seiko’s mid-range sells design, heritage and case-making, with the movement as a competent enabler — and judged as that, the 6R35 is fine: robust, serviceable, long-running and made in-house by a manufacturer that will still exist in fifty years. The buyer it burns is the one who believed the price implied chronometry.
So the purchase advice is expectation-shaped. If delivered accuracy is your metric, the Swiss option at this price wins and it is not close. If the watch itself is the point and a wide-but-livable rate is acceptable — especially armed with the positional trick — the 6R35 powers some of the best value watch-making, as opposed to movement-making, in its class. Just walk in knowing which purchase you are making.

Drop-in swaps solved everything in the SKX era, but Alpinists and Prospex divers increasingly carry collector value that depends on originality — an NH-swapped example has traded part of its identity for a timekeeping tweak. The positional strategy or a targeted regulation preserves the watch; the swap is the one intervention you cannot cleanly undo once the original movement is lost.
Does the 70-hour reserve actually hold up?
Yes, and it is easily tested: wind fully and let the watch sit — a healthy example is still running just short of three days later. Rate typically drifts near the very end of the reserve as mainspring torque falls, which is normal across mechanical watches. A 6R35 stopping far short of 70 hours has a mainspring or service problem, which is a real finding unrelated to the accuracy debate.
