The NH35 is the most widely fitted mechanical movement in affordable watchmaking. It powers a large share of homage and microbrand watches, which means it is also the component most often quietly substituted for something cheaper.

How to verify an NH35 without opening the case

Two behavioural tests and one visual check settle almost every NH35 question in under a minute.

Hacking test

Pull the crown out to its furthest position. On an NH35 the seconds hand stops dead. A hand that keeps sweeping indicates a different, cheaper calibre.

Hand-winding test

With the crown in its first position, wind it. You should feel the mainspring take up resistance rather than the crown spinning freely.

Beat rate

21,600 vibrations per hour is six steps per second. Count against a clock: six distinct increments per second, not eight and not one.

Rotor marking

Through a display back the rotor should be marked. Blank rotors appear on substituted movements and on some legitimately rebranded units, so read this alongside the behavioural tests.

Date at 3

The NH35 has a date at three. NH36 adds a day, NH38 removes the date and shows an open heart. A mismatch means a different calibre in the family.

Power reserve

Roughly 41 hours. A watch that stops overnight after a full day of wear is either not an NH35 or needs service.

What the NH35 is, and why it is everywhere

The NH35 is an automatic movement produced by Seiko’s movement manufacturing arm and sold as a component to other watch companies. That last part is what makes it unusual. Most large manufacturers keep their movements for their own watches; Seiko sells this one openly, which is why it turns up inside hundreds of brands that have no other connection to Seiko.

The specification is modest and completely honest about itself: 24 jewels, a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour, roughly 41 hours of power reserve, a date at three, and both hacking seconds and hand-winding. It is not a refined movement. It is regulated loosely at the factory, finished plainly, and built to be reliable and cheap to service rather than impressive.

That combination has made it the default engine of the affordable mechanical watch. Homage brands, microbrands and marketplace labels all use it, and the same movement appears in watches costing thirty dollars and three hundred. When a brand advertises the NH35 by name, it is generally telling the truth, because the movement is a selling point rather than something to conceal.

The two tests that matter

Because the NH35 is what a buyer is usually promised, it is also what gets substituted. The cheapest automatic movements available cost meaningfully less, and in a listing photograph the difference is invisible. Fortunately the NH35 has two behaviours that its cheapest replacements generally lack.

The first is hacking. Pull the crown out to its furthest position and the seconds hand should stop dead, allowing the watch to be set to the second. Many bottom-tier automatics simply keep sweeping. The second is hand-winding: with the crown in its first position, turning it should visibly load the mainspring, with the resistance you would expect. On movements without hand-winding the crown spins freely and does nothing.

A third check confirms the beat rate. At 21,600 vibrations per hour the seconds hand advances in six distinct steps per second. A movement running at 28,800 gives eight, which is visibly smoother, and a quartz movement gives one obvious tick. Counting against a clock for a few seconds is enough to tell these apart.

NH35, NH36, NH38 and the 4R series

The family causes recurring confusion because the members look identical from outside. The NH35 has a date window at three. The NH36 adds a day of the week alongside it. The NH38 removes the date entirely and exposes part of the balance through the dial, which is why it appears in open-heart designs.

Alongside these sit Seiko’s own 4R35 and 4R36, which share the same base architecture but appear in Seiko-branded watches. The practical consequence is that an NH35 is not an anonymous generic movement; it is the same engineering that Seiko puts in its own products, sold under a different designation to other companies.

This matters when assessing value. A brand fitting an NH35 is not cutting a corner relative to the affordable Seiko watches it competes with — it is using the same movement. What separates those watches is everything else: case finishing, crystal, bracelet, regulation and quality control.

Accuracy, regulation and service

NH35 movements are supplied unregulated or loosely regulated, and this is the single most common source of disappointment among buyers new to mechanical watches. Out of the box, a given example may run anywhere within a fairly wide band per day. That is not a fault and it is not evidence of a fake; it is what the specification allows.

The movement responds well to regulation, and a watchmaker can usually bring one to within a few seconds a day for a modest fee. Many owners find this transforms their experience of an inexpensive watch. Some brands regulate before shipping and advertise the fact, which is a genuine and meaningful differentiator worth paying for.

Serviceability is the movement’s quiet advantage. Parts are widely available and any competent watchmaker knows the calibre. In practice, however, a full service often costs more than the entire watch, so most NH35s are treated as replaceable rather than serviceable — an entirely rational approach at these prices, if an unromantic one.

Longevity is generally good. These movements are simple, robustly built and forgiving of neglect, which is precisely why so many manufacturers have standardised on them.

Signs the movement is not an NH35

Any one of these means the calibre is not what was advertised.

Seconds hand will not stop

The NH35 hacks. A seconds hand that keeps sweeping with the crown fully out is a different, cheaper movement.

Crown spins freely when wound

The NH35 hand-winds. A crown that engages nothing in the winding position indicates a substitute calibre.

One tick per second

That is a quartz movement. If the listing said automatic, this is a substitution and grounds for immediate return.

Seller will not name the calibre

The NH35 is a selling point that brands advertise. Avoiding the question is itself informative.
