How to authenticate a Marathon

One test separates a Marathon from almost every imitation, and it takes a dark room and no equipment.

Tritium tube behaviour

Genuine tritium gas tubes glow continuously without being charged. Put the watch in a dark drawer overnight — real tubes still glow in the morning, photoluminescent lume is completely dead.

Tube construction

Tritium tubes are small sealed glass cylinders with visibly defined ends, not painted plots. Under magnification the difference is unmistakable.

Government dial markings

Issued examples carry designations that civilian versions do not. Their absence means a civilian watch, which is genuine but different.

NATO Stock Number

Why Marathon is different from most military-styled brands

An enormous number of watches are sold with military styling and vague implications of issue. Marathon belongs to the much smaller category of brands with genuine, current supply relationships with military customers, which means its issue claims are actually testable rather than merely atmospheric.

That testability runs through two features. The first is tritium illumination: sealed glass tubes containing tritium gas with a phosphor coating, which glow continuously for years without any exposure to light. This is a regulated, specialist technology, not a finish that can be approximated with paint. The second is procurement markings, including NATO Stock Numbers, which are real cataloguing identifiers rather than decoration.

Together these mean that authenticating a Marathon is unusually concrete. Instead of assessing whether a story feels plausible, you can put the watch in a dark drawer and look at it in the morning, and you can read a stock number off the caseback. Few military-styled brands offer anything comparable.

The tritium test, and why it cannot be faked cheaply

Photoluminescent lume — the standard compound on almost every watch — works by absorbing light and re-emitting it. It must be charged, and it fades. Even excellent modern compounds are effectively dark after a few hours and completely dark after a night with no light source.

Tritium gas tubes work on an entirely different principle. The tube contains tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, and its emissions excite a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass. The result is continuous light output that requires no charging at all and continues for years, gradually diminishing as the tritium decays.

The practical test follows directly. Put the watch somewhere completely dark for several hours — overnight in a closed drawer is ideal — and then look at it before exposing it to any light. Genuine tritium tubes are still glowing, clearly and evenly. Photoluminescent lume, no matter how impressive it looked when charged, is entirely dark.

Under magnification the physical difference is equally clear. Tritium markers are small sealed glass cylinders with visibly defined ends and a uniform internal glow. Painted lume plots have soft, applied edges and sit on the dial surface. Once you have seen both, they are not confusable.

Issued versus civilian, and reading the markings

The distinction that matters most in Marathon collecting is not real versus fake but issued versus civilian. Getting the reference right

Marathon’s reference names look similar and describe genuinely different watches. GSAR, TSAR, JSAR and MSAR differ in size, movement type and intended role, and they are not variants of a single design. Most importantly, some are automatic and some are quartz by specification rather than by tier.

That last point causes real confusion, because buyers accustomed to mechanical watches being the premium option assume a quartz Marathon is a lesser version. It is not. Quartz was specified for particular roles because it is more accurate, more shock resistant and requires no winding, all of which matter more than mechanical prestige in the contexts these watches were designed for.

For authentication purposes, the movement type identifies the reference. An automatic movement in a watch sold as a quartz reference means the listing is wrong about what it is selling — which may be innocent, but should be resolved before money changes hands.
