Royal Pop

Audemars Piguet's first crossover with Swatch lands tomorrow as eight pop-art pocket watches.

A 40mm Bioceramic pocket watch with a Royal Oak octagonal bezel, eight hex screws and "Petite Tapisserie" guilloché dial. Eight colorways, each named for the numeral "eight" in a different language. Prices run $400 to $420. In-store only at Swatch boutiques worldwide — one per person, per store, per day. This is the first time Audemars Piguet has licensed the Royal Oak's visual language to anyone, and the first time Swatch has partnered outside its own group.

The pitch, in three beats

Looks like a Royal Oak.

Octagonal bezel, eight hex screws, "Petite Tapisserie" guilloché dial, vertical satin finish — every Royal Oak code transposed onto a 40mm pocket-watch case. The visual quote is unmistakable from across the room, and the proportions translate surprisingly well from wrist to pocket. AP collectors will read it immediately; everyone else will reach for the chain.

Made like a Swatch.

Bioceramic case (ceramic-filled polyamide 11 from castor oil), acrylic crystal, manually-wound SISTEM51 movement with a 90-hour power reserve, welded construction. Same one-shot, sealed-for-life assembly philosophy as a MoonSwatch — you wind it, you wear it, you do not service it. Battery-free mechanical mainspring inside.

First of its kind.

Swatch's first luxury crossover outside the Swatch Group. Audemars Piguet — fiercely independent and one of only a handful of haute-horlogerie houses still family-owned — has never licensed its Royal Oak codes like this. 100% of AP's proceeds fund watchmaking heritage initiatives at the Musée Atelier.

Eight watches, eight languages for the number eight.

Each model is named for the numeral "eight" in a different language — a nod to the eight hex screws on a Royal Oak bezel. Six are Lépine (crown at 12), two are Savonnette (crown at 9, with small seconds).

Lépine = crown positioned at 12 o'clock with hours and minutes on the main dial. Savonnette = side-winder with the crown at 9 o'clock and a small seconds counter. The two Savonnette references carry a $20 premium.

Where to buy

  • In-store only at participating Swatch boutiques worldwide. No online sales at launch.

  • The US has ~21 participating boutiques, including SoHo and Times Square (NYC), Miami Beach, Las Vegas, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Austin, Nashville, Tampa, Orlando, Honolulu, Charlotte and Santa Clara.

Custom display frames sold separately at $45 each.

Will it hold its value?

The MoonSwatch ($260 retail, March 2022) peaked at $900–$1,000 in the week after launch as queues wrapped around city blocks. Today, four years in, most models settle at $300–$400 on the secondary market — limited variants like the Moonshine Gold still hold $550–$1,000+. Royal Pop's higher entry price, pocket-watch novelty and AP halo all suggest a steeper early curve, particularly for the two Savonnette references with their small-seconds counters.

Forecasts assume Swatch and AP keep production restricted. A re-issue or wider drop would collapse premiums fast.
