Almost all fake-AP demand sits on two watches: the Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Offshore. The one tell that catches most fakes
Forget the logo for a moment and read two surfaces. First, the tapisserie dial: on a genuine Royal Oak the waffle grid is cut on a rose-engine lathe, so each tiny square has real, uniform depth and a crisp raised border that flashes as you tilt the watch. Fakes stamp or mould the pattern, so it looks flat, shallow and slightly mushy, with squares that vary in size toward the edges.
Second, the movement through the sapphire back: a real automatic Royal Oak shows a solid 22-carat gold rotor and bridges with mirror-polished bevels, Cotes de Geneve striping and perlage. Replicas use a decorated clone movement whose finishing looks printed and flat, often with a base-calibre regulator lever that a genuine free-sprung AP calibre never has.
Reading the tapisserie: depth, not just pattern
AP guilloche comes in three grains — Petite Tapisserie (the smallest, seen on early and some Jumbo dials), Grande Tapisserie (the bolder grid on most modern Royal Oaks) and Mega Tapisserie (largest, on many Offshores). Whichever grain your reference uses, the test is the same: tilt the dial and watch the light. Genuine squares are pyramidal and identical, with sharp raised walls. A fake dial reads flat and even, the ridges rounded off, and the pattern often drifts out of register near the applied markers.
The caseback: hand-finishing a clone can't fake
If the watch has a display back, this is your strongest single check. A genuine automatic Royal Oak — calibre 4302 in the current 41mm Selfwinding, 3120 in the earlier 15400, or the ultra-thin 2121 in the classic Jumbo — shows a solid 22-carat gold rotor and bridges with mirror-polished, hand-bevelled edges, Cotes de Geneve stripes and circular perlage. Crucially, these calibres are free-sprung, so there is no regulator lever. Many replicas fit a cheap base movement with a visible regulator arm and a brass rotor merely plated to look gold.
The octagonal bezel and its eight screws
The Royal Oak's octagonal bezel is secured by eight hexagonal screws made of white gold, held by white-gold nuts on the caseback side — so they are functional, not ornamental. On a genuine watch they sit perfectly flush and are aligned with obsessive precision. Even convincing replicas struggle to get all eight screws seated at equal depth with consistent slot orientation, which makes this a quick, reliable read.
Where satin meets mirror: the finishing edge
The Royal Oak's case and integrated bracelet alternate brushed tops with polished bevels, and the whole watch is judged on one thing: the border where those two finishes meet. On a genuine AP that line is cut dead-straight and razor-crisp, so satin and mirror stay cleanly separated. Fakes soften the polishing wheel over the edge, so the two finishes bleed into a rounded, hazy transition — the single hardest thing for a factory to reproduce at volume.

1 · Tapisserie depth
Tilt the dial under a lamp. Genuine Petite, Grande or Mega Tapisserie squares are pyramidal, identical and sharply walled, throwing hard highlights and shadows. Fakes look flat and faint, with squares that lose register or change size toward the applied markers and the outer edge.
2 · Movement finishing
Through a display back, look for a solid 22-carat gold rotor and bridges with mirror-polished bevels, Cotes de Geneve and perlage. AP calibres 3120, 4302 and 2121 are free-sprung with no regulator lever. A plus/minus regulator, a plated rotor, or flat printed decoration means a clone movement.
3 · Bezel screws
Count and inspect all eight hexagonal white-gold screws. On a genuine Royal Oak they are flush with the bezel and aligned with precision. Uneven depth, sloppy spacing, or hex heads and slots rotated at random are classic replica tells.
4 · Case finishing transitions
The Royal Oak's alternating brushed tops and polished bevels meet at razor-sharp borders. Genuine transitions are crisp and dead-straight; fakes blur the two finishes together or leave wavy, rounded edges where satin meets mirror polish.
5 · Bracelet & weight
The integrated bracelet should flow from the case with tight, wobble-free links and a smooth clasp carrying a sharply engraved AP. A solid steel Royal Oak feels dense, generally around 150–250g. A watch that feels light, hollow or tinny is a red flag.
6 · Dial text & markers
The applied AP logo and hour markers are cleanly set with consistent depth; printed text is sharp, thin and evenly spaced. Fakes show fuzzy or uneven fonts, markers that sit at slightly different heights, and date windows that are off-centre or cut at the wrong angle.
Genuine vs. fake at a glance
Seven features, side by side. No single row is proof on its own, but a watch that lands in the right-hand column on two or more of these should not be bought without an in-person inspection.
The applied AP: set, not printed
On modern Royal Oaks the AP monogram and the hour markers are separate metal parts, cut, faceted and pinned into the dial so they catch light with real edges and cast tiny shadows. The signature sits low, crisp and level. Fakes usually pad-print a flat logo or fit soft, unevenly seated markers — look for fuzzy serif edges, markers at slightly different heights, and lume that pools instead of sitting in a clean channel.
The caseback engraving and where the number lives
AP does not laser a serial onto the outside of the case for you to read. On a Royal Oak the reference and the individual case number are engraved between the lugs and on the inner caseback — deep, sharp and consistent. A solid-back model wears a cleanly engraved AP or model wordmark; a display-back model shows the movement instead. Shallow, sandy or wandering engraving, or a serial casually stamped on the outer back, is a warning. There is no public database, so a number alone never proves authenticity — AP verifies through its boutiques.
Which calibre should be inside?
Matching the movement to the reference and its era is one of the strongest tests, because fakes rarely fit the correct calibre. Know these four and you cover most of the Royal Oak line: the ultra-thin 2121 of the Jumbo, the workhorse automatics 3120 and 4302, and the chronograph 2385. All are free-sprung (the chrono aside on its own module), none carry a regulator lever, and all are finished by hand.
The short list of instant fails
Any one of these, on its own, is enough to walk away and demand an in-person inspection. None of them requires opening the watch.
