Why the movement is the anchor
Authentication normally works inwards from the dial. With Vostok it works outwards from the movement, and the reason is economic. A complete Amphibia sells for well under a hundred dollars. Producing a convincing clone of a 31-jewel automatic to put inside one would cost more than the finished watch is worth.
The consequence is that genuinely counterfeit Vostok movements barely exist. What does exist in quantity is the parts watch: a genuine Chistopol movement in a genuine case wearing a reprinted dial, or a genuine dial on a case it never belonged to, or an anonymous Chinese automatic behind a real Vostok dial.
So the first question is simply whether the movement is a marked Vostok calibre. If it is, you own a Vostok, and every remaining question concerns which parts belong together. If it is not — if the movement is unmarked or obviously not Soviet — then somebody has built a watch around a donor case and the correct price is scrap value plus the dial.
The four calibres and how to tell them apart
Two questions identify every common Vostok movement. Does the watch wind itself, and does it have a date? The 2409 is hand-wound without a date. The 2414 is hand-wound with one. The 2416B is automatic with a date. The 2431 is automatic without one.
The automatics carry 31 jewels and the hand-wound calibres 17, which is a large enough difference to be a useful confirmation where the count is visible or documented. All four run at roughly 19,800 vibrations per hour, which is slow by any modern standard and produces a noticeably stepped seconds hand.
Power reserve across the family sits in the region of 31 to 38 hours. A watch that runs down substantially faster is not a different calibre; it is a calibre that needs service, which on a Vostok is inexpensive but does need doing.
What the calibre tells you about the watch
Because Vostok fitted specific movements to specific models, the calibre is also a check on whether the watch is what it claims to be. Amphibias commonly use the automatic 2416B; Komandirskies commonly use the hand-wound 2414. Finding an automatic inside a Komandirskie case is not evidence of fraud, but it does indicate a modification.
That modification is extremely common and entirely legitimate as a hobby. Vostok modding is a large, open and enthusiastic community, and swapping an Amphibia automatic into a Komandirskie is a standard project. The watch is not fake; it is modified, and should be priced as an assembled watch rather than as an original.
Where this matters is in listings that describe a modified watch as untouched. The movement check catches it immediately, which is one more reason to start there rather than with the dial.
Finishing, accuracy and expectations
Vostok movements are functional rather than beautiful. The finishing is plain, the rotor is undecorated, the bridges are simple, and the regulation is approximate. Anyone approaching one expecting Swiss refinement will be disappointed, and anyone approaching it expecting a robust cheap mechanical movement will not.
Accuracy varies considerably between examples and is generally acceptable rather than good. These movements respond to regulation, and a watchmaker can improve matters, though the cost of doing so is a significant fraction of what the watch is worth.
Durability is the real strength. These are simple, over-engineered movements designed for a market where servicing was not readily available, and they tolerate neglect remarkably well. A great many Soviet-era Vostoks are still running on original service intervals measured in decades.
That combination — crude, cheap, tough and completely unfakeable — is what makes the calibre family such a useful authentication anchor and such an enduring cult object.

The first is decisive; the rest indicate assembly rather than fakery.
Unmarked or non-Soviet movement
The watch is not a Vostok. Somebody has built it around a donor case, and it should be priced accordingly.
Calibre does not match the model
An automatic in a Komandirskie usually indicates a modification. Common and legitimate, but not an original watch.

It is the cheapest thing to verify and the hardest thing to fake. Its absence from a listing is a choice.
