Why Gucci is different from the fashion-watch crowd

A counterfeit sold in 1988 has spent nearly four decades acquiring honest wear, original-looking straps and estate-sale provenance, and it will keep fooling buyers who treat age as authentication. The rule: age proves age, nothing else.

For the classic vintage families, the checks are the same but stricter: documented family traits, Swiss-grade execution, serial sanity, and correct-for-era details like crystal type and clasp signing. Where a piece matters financially or sentimentally, compare against multiple documented genuine examples of the same reference rather than a single web photo, and treat every anomaly as a question to resolve before money moves.
