Why the 2824-2 is everywhere
For decades the 2824-2 was the default Swiss automatic. It is dimensionally convenient, reliable, easy to service, and was supplied in enormous quantity to brands across the price spectrum. If you own a Swiss watch below the very top of the market and it is not from a brand with its own movement manufacture, there is a reasonable chance a 2824-2 or a close relative is inside.
The specification is unremarkable in isolation: 25 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, roughly 38 hours of reserve, hacking seconds, hand-winding, and a date. What made it dominant was not brilliance but availability, serviceability and the fact that every watchmaker in the world knows it.
That ubiquity has a practical consequence for owners. Parts are available, expertise is universal, and a 2824-2 can be serviced almost anywhere in the world for a predictable sum. For a watch you intend to keep, that matters more than most specification-sheet differences.
The grades, and why they are the whole story
ETA supplied the 2824-2 in several grades, commonly identified as Standard, Elaboré, Top and Chronometer. All four share the same architecture, the same jewel count and the same beat rate. What differs is the quality of the balance and hairspring, the number of positions the movement is regulated in, the tightness of the tolerances, and the level of finishing.
The consequence is that two watches can both accurately advertise an ETA 2824-2 while performing quite differently and costing quite differently. A Standard grade example may run within a fairly wide daily band; a Top or Chronometer grade example is held to a much tighter specification and typically regulated across more positions.
This is not deception on ETA’s part — the grades are published and brands are generally open about which they use when it flatters them. The Sellita SW200-1 is the other movement you will meet constantly, and the two are closely related in practice: dimensionally similar, functionally equivalent, and frequently interchangeable in the same case. Sellita historically assembled movements for ETA, and when supply arrangements changed it began producing its own alternatives to the calibres it knew intimately.
For a buyer this matters mainly for expectations. A watch fitted with an SW200-1 is not a compromised version of a 2824-2 watch; it is a watch with a different but comparable Swiss automatic inside. Some brands moved across without changing anything else, and in several cases without changing the price.
Where it does matter is in description. A watch advertised as containing an ETA that turns out to contain a Sellita has been misdescribed, whether through carelessness or otherwise. Confirm which is fitted rather than assuming, particularly on watches from the period when many brands were transitioning between the two.
Service, longevity and cost of ownership
The 2824-2’s greatest practical virtue is that it is completely unmysterious. Any competent watchmaker has serviced hundreds, parts are available, and the intervals and costs are predictable. Over a long ownership period this is worth considerably more than a marginally better specification on paper.
Service intervals are conventionally quoted in years rather than by usage, and a well-maintained 2824-2 can run for decades. Higher grades tend to hold their regulation longer between services, which is one of the less-discussed benefits of paying for a better grade.
The main cost consideration is that a Swiss service is meaningfully more expensive than replacing a Japanese calibre outright. That changes the ownership calculus: a 2824-2 watch is worth maintaining in a way that an inexpensive Japanese automatic frequently is not, and buyers should factor that into what they pay for a neglected example.
A watch that has not been serviced in a very long time is not a bargain merely because it currently runs.
