How to spot a fake TAG Heuer Aquaracer

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 is one of the most popular Swiss dive watches, and one of the most counterfeited. This guide covers every authentication checkpoint: the 12-sided bezel, hexagonal crown, ceramic insert, dial texture, bracelet, movement, and serial numbers. References covered: WBP201A, WBP2010, WBP201B, and CBP2010.

The Aquaracer has been TAG Heuer's flagship dive watch since 2004, evolving from the earlier 2000 Series and Aquagraph models. The current Aquaracer Professional 300, launched in 2021, introduced a refined design with a ceramic bezel insert, updated case proportions, and an improved bracelet. Its distinctive dodecagonal (12-sided) bezel and hexagonal screw-down crown make it visually distinctive, but as one of the most popular entry-level Swiss luxury sport watches, it is heavily targeted by counterfeiters.

Quick authentication checklist

These quick checks can identify many fake TAG Heuer Aquaracers within seconds:

  • 1. 12-sided bezel geometry: The Aquaracer's dodecagonal bezel has 12 precisely machined flat facets. View the bezel from above: each facet should be identical in width with perfectly sharp edges between them. On counterfeits, the facets are often slightly unequal in size, the edges between facets are rounded rather than crisp, or the overall shape appears more circular than truly 12-sided.
  • 2. Hexagonal crown: The Aquaracer's screw-down crown has a distinctive hexagonal (six-sided) shape with the TAG Heuer shield logo engraved on the end. The hexagonal facets should be sharp and precisely machined. On fakes, the crown is often round rather than truly hexagonal, the shield logo is poorly engraved or missing, and the screw-down threading feels rough.
  • 3. Ceramic bezel insert: Current Aquaracer Professional 300 models use a ceramic bezel insert with engraved and lume-filled numerals. The ceramic should feel smooth, cool to the touch, and show zero scratches from normal wear. The lume-filled markings should be precise and evenly filled. Older models used aluminum inserts. Counterfeits often use painted aluminum or cheap ceramic with visible imperfections.
  • 4. Weight test: A genuine Aquaracer Professional 300 (43mm on bracelet, ref. WBP2010) weighs approximately 190 grams. The solid stainless steel construction gives it a substantial feel. Counterfeit Aquaracers frequently weigh 15-30 grams less due to hollow links, thinner case walls, or inferior steel grades.
  • 5. Dial texture: The Aquaracer Professional 300 dial features a distinctive horizontal striped pattern (reminiscent of a ship's deck). Under magnification, these lines should be perfectly parallel, evenly spaced, and consistent across the entire dial surface. On counterfeits, the lines are often uneven, too deep, too shallow, or inconsistently spaced.

The dial

The Aquaracer dial is designed for underwater legibility with large luminous markers and a textured surface. The details are specific and well-documented.

Dial texture and finish

The current Aquaracer Professional 300 features a horizontal line texture across the entire dial surface. These lines are machine-engraved with precision and should be perfectly parallel and evenly spaced under magnification. The black dial variant has a deep, pure black background with the lines creating a subtle texture visible in certain lighting. The blue dial variant (WBP201B) has a rich, deep blue with the same line pattern. On counterfeits, the dial texture is frequently the weakest point: lines may be unevenly spaced, inconsistent in depth, or printed rather than engraved.

Hour markers

The Aquaracer uses applied luminous hour markers in polished stainless steel surrounds. The markers at 6, 9, and 12 are rectangular batons, while the remaining positions use round dots. The 12 o'clock position features a double baton marker. Each marker should be perfectly aligned with its corresponding bezel graduation and sit at a consistent height above the dial. The luminous material should be Super-LumiNova (green glow) applied evenly with no gaps or bubbles. On counterfeits, the markers often sit at slightly different heights, the alignment is off, or the lume quality is inferior.

Printing quality

The dial text includes "TAG Heuer" in the brand's specific typeface below 12 o'clock, "AQUARACER" and "PROFESSIONAL 300" text, and "SWISS MADE" at 6 o'clock. Under magnification, all text should be sharp and clean with no bleeding or fuzzy edges. The TAG Heuer logo text uses a specific kerning and weight that counterfeiters frequently get wrong. Pay particular attention to the spacing between "TAG" and "Heuer" and the relative sizes of "AQUARACER" versus "PROFESSIONAL 300."

Hands

The Aquaracer uses arrow-shaped hour and minute hands with large luminous inserts for underwater readability. The hour hand is shorter and wider with a distinctive arrow tip. The minute hand extends to the minute track. The seconds hand is thin with a luminous square tip. On a genuine Aquaracer, the hands are perfectly finished with polished edges and consistent lume fill. On counterfeits, the hand shapes may be slightly wrong, the lume fill uneven, and the polished edges less defined.

The bezel

The 12-sided unidirectional rotating bezel is the Aquaracer's most distinctive design element and one of the strongest authentication markers.

Dodecagonal shape

The Aquaracer bezel has exactly 12 flat facets forming a regular dodecagon when viewed from above. Each facet is precisely the same width, and the edges between facets are sharp and clearly defined. The facets provide grip for wet-finger operation underwater. On counterfeits, the facet widths may vary slightly, the edges are often rounded rather than sharp, and the overall shape may appear more circular than truly angular. Hold the watch at eye level and rotate it slowly to check each facet edge.

Ceramic insert

The current Aquaracer Professional 300 uses a ceramic bezel insert with engraved minute markings and numerals filled with luminous material. The ceramic has a deep, uniform color (black or blue depending on the variant) and is virtually scratch-proof. The engraved markings should be perfectly consistent in depth and width, with the lume fill smooth and level with the ceramic surface. The 60-minute graduation at 12 o'clock uses a luminous triangle marker. On counterfeits, the ceramic quality is often inferior with visible micro-pitting, the engravings may be uneven, and the lume fill may sit above or below the surface level.

Unidirectional rotation

The Aquaracer bezel rotates counterclockwise only (the standard safety feature for dive watches). The rotation should produce 120 firm, evenly spaced clicks with no mushy or inconsistent positions. The bezel should sit flush with the case with zero vertical play or wobble. When aligned, the luminous triangle at 12 should line up precisely with the 12 o'clock marker on the dial. On counterfeits, the click action is often weak or inconsistent, and the bezel may have noticeable play.

The case

Case finishing

The Aquaracer Professional 300 case features a combination of satin-brushed and polished surfaces. The case sides are satin-brushed with perfectly parallel grain lines. The bezel surround and certain case edges are polished. The transitions between finishes are clean and well-defined. The lug tips are slightly tapered with a polished chamfer. On counterfeits, the finishing is often the most obvious tell: uneven brushing, soft transitions between finishes, and poorly defined chamfer edges.

Hexagonal crown

The screw-down crown is one of the Aquaracer's most distinctive features: it has a hexagonal shape rather than the round crown used by most watches. Each of the six facets should be flat and precisely machined. The TAG Heuer shield logo is engraved on the crown's outer face. The crown should screw down smoothly with 2-3 turns and seal securely. Crown guards on either side protect the crown. On counterfeits, the crown shape is frequently not truly hexagonal (more rounded), the shield logo is poorly engraved or replaced with a generic emblem, and the screw-down mechanism feels rough.

Case dimensions

The Aquaracer Professional 300 is available in 36mm (WBP231B), 40mm (WBP201A), and 43mm (WBP2010) sizes. The 43mm model has a thickness of approximately 12.2mm and a lug-to-lug distance of approximately 47mm. The 40mm model measures approximately 11.8mm thick. Use a digital caliper to verify dimensions. Counterfeits frequently have slightly incorrect dimensions, particularly in thickness.

Caseback

The Aquaracer has a solid screw-down caseback with engraved text including the model reference, water resistance rating (300M/1000FT), and TAG Heuer branding. Some models feature an embossed diver's helmet design. The engravings should be deep, clean, and perfectly centered. On counterfeits, the caseback engravings are often shallow, off-center, or use incorrect fonts. The diver's helmet detail, if present, should be sharply defined with clean edges.

The bracelet

Bracelet construction

The Aquaracer Professional 300 bracelet is a three-row design with alternating brushed outer links and polished center links. The current generation bracelet features a refined H-shaped link design. Each link should be solid stainless steel with no hollow links. The articulation between links should be smooth with no catching or lateral play. The bracelet tapers from approximately 21mm at the lugs (43mm model) to the clasp. On counterfeits, the bracelet often has hollow links (test by pressing on them), loose tolerances, and inconsistent finishing between brushed and polished surfaces.

Clasp and extension

The Aquaracer uses a folding clasp with double push-button release and a diving extension that allows the bracelet to expand over a wetsuit. The clasp is stamped with the TAG Heuer logo on the exterior. Inside, the clasp should be finished with the model reference stamped. The push buttons should operate smoothly and the clasp should close with a secure click. The diving extension should fold out and lock into position when needed. On counterfeits, the clasp construction is frequently inferior with loose push buttons, poor stamping quality, and a non-functional or absent diving extension.

End links

The end links (where the bracelet connects to the case) on a genuine Aquaracer should fit the case with minimal gap. The transition between the lug and end link should appear almost seamless when viewed from the side. The end link shape mirrors the lug profile. On counterfeits, the end links frequently have visible gaps between the link and case, and the profile may not match the lug contour precisely.

The movement

The movement is not visible through the solid caseback but can be assessed through external performance characteristics.

Caliber specifications

Current Aquaracer models use the following movements:

  • WBP201A/WBP2010 (three-hand): Calibre 5 Automatic (based on Sellita SW200-1), 38-hour power reserve, 26 jewels, 28,800 vph
  • CBP2010 (chronograph): Calibre TH31 (LVMH in-house), 80-hour power reserve, column-wheel chronograph, 33 jewels, 28,800 vph
  • CBP2110 (older chrono): Calibre 16 (based on ETA 7750), 42-hour power reserve, 25 jewels, 28,800 vph
  • WBP231B (36mm): Calibre 5 Automatic, same specifications as the larger models

Power reserve and accuracy

Wind the Calibre 5 models fully and verify they run for approximately 38 hours. The Calibre TH31 chronograph should achieve close to 80 hours. All movements should keep time within approximately -4/+6 seconds per day, consistent with COSC-adjacent performance (the Calibre TH31 is COSC-certified). If the watch loses or gains significantly more time, the movement may not be genuine. A timegrapher test can confirm the exact beat rate and amplitude.

Crown and winding feel

The screw-down hexagonal crown should unscrew with smooth, precise threading. In the first pulled position, the date should quickset with distinct clicks. In the second position, the seconds hand should hack (stop) immediately. Manual winding in the screwed-down position should feel smooth with consistent, subtle resistance. On counterfeits, the crown threading is frequently rough, hacking may not function, and the winding sensation is often inconsistent or gritty.

Serial number authentication

Caseback serial and reference

The TAG Heuer serial number is engraved on the caseback along with the model reference number. TAG Heuer serial numbers follow a specific alphanumeric format. The engravings should be clean, deep, and precisely executed. Under magnification, the characters should be perfectly formed with no rough edges. The reference number format for current Aquaracers follows the WBP/CBP pattern (e.g., WBP2010.BA0632 for the 43mm on bracelet).

Lug serial

On many TAG Heuer watches, an additional serial number is engraved between the lugs at 6 o'clock, visible when the bracelet is removed. This serial should match the caseback serial exactly. The engraving should be clean and consistent with the caseback engraving quality. Counterfeits may omit this engraving entirely or have a mismatched serial.

TAG Heuer warranty and verification

Genuine TAG Heuer watches come with a warranty card (now digital via the TAG Heuer Connected app) that includes the serial number and model reference. TAG Heuer offers authentication services through their boutiques and authorized service centers. They can verify the serial against their production database. For any pre-owned purchase, request the warranty card and verify the serial matches. If the seller cannot provide documentation, proceed with additional caution.

Common counterfeit tells

TAG Heuer Aquaracer counterfeits most commonly fail in these areas:

  • Rounded bezel facets — the 12-sided shape is not truly angular, appearing more round than dodecagonal
  • Round crown — the hexagonal shape is absent or barely perceptible, with a missing or poorly engraved shield logo
  • Dial texture inconsistency — horizontal lines are printed rather than engraved, or unevenly spaced
  • Lightweight bracelet — hollow links and thinner steel result in a noticeably lighter watch
  • Poor lume quality — dim, uneven, or wrong-color luminous material on dial and bezel
  • Non-functional dive extension — the wetsuit extension in the clasp is absent or does not work

Where counterfeits consistently fail

The combination of the 12-sided bezel geometry and hexagonal crown makes the Aquaracer one of the easier luxury sport watches to authenticate visually. These two features require precision machining that is difficult and expensive to replicate at counterfeit quality levels. If either the bezel or crown geometry appears rounded or imprecise, the watch is almost certainly counterfeit.

Important Note

This guide covers visual and physical authentication markers, but no amount of photo analysis replaces hands-on inspection. For any TAG Heuer Aquaracer purchase, especially in the pre-owned market, an in-person inspection by a certified watchmaker or authorized TAG Heuer dealer is always the gold standard. The cost of professional authentication is insignificant compared to the cost of buying a counterfeit.
