The killer check: pair it with the Suunto app

The Core is Suunto's classic ABC watch (altimeter, barometer, compass) and by far the most counterfeited model in the lineup: fakes flooded eBay, AliExpress, and street markets for years and still circulate secondhand. The Core predates the app-pairing era, so you cannot run the software check on it. Test the instruments. Switch to the altimeter and walk up a few flights of stairs, or check the barometer across a few hours of shifting weather: on a genuine Core the readings move. Open the compass and rotate the watch: the heading must track your rotation smoothly. A Core whose altimeter, barometer, and compass sit frozen no matter what you do is fake, no further inspection needed.
Then check the build. The known physical tells on Core fakes: mushy, vague button presses where the genuine buttons give a defined click; a backlight in the wrong tone compared to the even glow of the real display; a misaligned negative display on the all-black variants, with the LCD frame visibly off-square in the case; and cheap, loose strap keepers on a strap that feels like brittle plastic rather than the genuine flexible elastomer. None of these alone is proof, but a Core rarely fails just one of them, and any of them plus a frozen sensor is a verdict.
Price reality: know the floor for each model
Suunto discounts during sales, so a fair deal proves nothing either way. What price gives you is a floor: real GPS sports watches with real optical sensors, sapphire or mineral crystals, and server-backed software cannot be produced for pocket change. When a listing sits far below the floor for its model, you are not looking at a bargain.
Where you buy matters as much as the number.
