What actually drives watch value

Six factors account for almost all the price variance between two identical references. Knowing them protects you from overpaying and helps you sell for more.

Reference number

A Rolex 116610LN trades $3,000 more than a 16610 despite looking nearly identical. The reference is your single most important value input.

Impact: 50–90% of price

Condition

Dial blemishes, bezel insert scratches, over-polished lugs, and bracelet stretch each knock 5–20% off. Mint unpolished pieces carry premiums.

Impact: 10–40% of price

Box & papers

A "full set" — box, warranty card, hang tags, receipt — adds 10–30%. The warranty card alone documents provenance and is the most valuable piece of paper in watch collecting.

Impact: 10–30% of price

Service history

A recent manufacturer service (with receipt) adds ~8% and signals a healthy movement. An unserviced 15-year-old watch with running issues can lose 20%.

Impact: 5–15% of price

Rarity & production year

Discontinued references, limited editions, and specific production years with desirable features (tropical dials, specific bezel variants) command strong premiums.

Impact: up to 500%+ on grails

Current demand

Markets shift. A reference that traded at $18k in 2022 might sit at $14k today. Our pricing data is pulled from sold listings in the last 90 days, not outdated asks.

Impact: ±15–30% per cycle
Five-year depreciation

Not every watch holds value.

Five-year value retention by brand, averaged across the most-traded references. Rolex steel sports watches regularly sell above retail on the secondary market. Fashion watches lose half their value in the first two years.

Frequently asked

Everything you need to know before checking your watch value.

How do I check my watch value for free?
Fastest route: upload clear photos of the dial, case back, and paperwork to WatchScanning. You'll get an instant market estimate based on live sold-listing data from Chrono24, WatchCharts, and eBay. For a rough number without photos, use the estimator above.
How accurate is an AI watch valuation?
Typically within 10–20% of the realised secondary-market price for mainstream brands (Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Cartier). Accuracy depends on photo quality and reference commonality. For anything over $10,000, cross-check with a live auction specialist before selling.
What affects the value of a watch the most?
In order: brand + reference number, condition, full set (box/papers) which adds 10–30%, service history, and current market demand. Original untouched dials and unpolished cases carry significant premiums on vintage pieces.
Do watches hold their value?
Some do, most do not. Rolex steel sport models (Submariner, Daytona, GMT), Patek Nautilus, and AP Royal Oak typically hold or exceed retail. Most fashion watches lose 40–60% of retail in the first five years. See the depreciation chart above.
Is this really free?
The quick estimator on this page is completely free with no sign-up. For a full photo-based AI valuation with authentication and a downloadable PDF report, the first scan is free; additional scans use credits purchased in packs starting at $20.
Can I check the value of a fake watch?
Replicas have minimal resale value — typically $20–$200 regardless of quality, since the buyer pool is restricted to collectors of replicas. Our AI flags counterfeits during the scan and points out the specific tells (date wheel font, rehaut engraving, bezel alignment).
Where is the serial number on my watch?
Engraved between the lugs at the 6 or 12 o'clock side. On newer Rolex it's laser-etched on the rehaut (inner bezel ring). The serial tells you the production year — always cross-check against the warranty card.
