Compare two watches to scale

Why 2 mm is bigger than it sounds
Diameter is a linear measurement but the dial you look at is an area, and area grows with the square of the radius. Going from 38 mm to 40 mm adds only 2 mm across, yet it adds roughly 11 percent more dial surface. That is why the step feels much larger on the wrist than the numbers suggest, and why people who insist they cannot tell the difference usually can.
The reverse trap is assuming the same diameter means the same size. Two 40 mm watches can differ by 6 mm in lug-to-lug, which is a far bigger difference in how they actually sit.
The three numbers that matter
Diameter
The width of the case, excluding the crown. The number brands advertise, and the least useful of the three on its own.
Lug-to-lug
Tip of the top lugs to tip of the bottom lugs. This is what decides whether the watch physically fits your wrist. If it overhangs, the case rocks and the strap bends at an angle.
Thickness
How tall the case stands. Under about 12 mm slides under a shirt cuff without thinking. Past 14 mm the watch starts to feel top-heavy and catches on things.

Is a 40 mm watch much bigger than a 38 mm?
Visibly, yes. About 11 percent more dial area, which reads as a clear step up rather than a subtle one.
Where do I find lug-to-lug for a watch?
Often not on the manufacturer's page, unfortunately. Enthusiast forums, owner reviews and specialist databases usually have it measured by hand.
Does a dark dial really wear smaller?
Slightly, yes, the same way dark clothing reads slimmer. A thick bezel has a bigger effect: it shrinks the dial opening and makes the whole watch look more compact than its diameter.
