How collectors actually argue about tiers
There is no official ranking of watch brands, which is precisely why tier lists are the internet’s favourite way to argue about them. What a tier list really measures is the ranker’s priorities. Rank by haute horlogerie finishing and the “holy trinity” of Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin sits in S with A. Lange & Söhne beside them, while Rolex lands in A for making superb tool watches rather than high complications. Rank by resale value and waiting lists, and Rolex is the undisputed S with Patek, and half of the trinity slides down. Rank by value for money and suddenly Grand Seiko, Tudor, Nomos and even Seiko crowd the top while some famous Swiss names sink.
The classic flashpoints, if you want to start a fight on purpose: whether Grand Seiko outranks Rolex; whether Omega belongs in S or A; whether Hublot and Richard Mille are S-tier engineering or C-tier taste; whether Tudor is A-tier value or forever B because of the badge; whether Invicta deserves F or a grudging D for its Pro Diver; and whether budget homage brands like San Martin, Steinhart and Pagani Design belong on a brand tier list at all. Every one of those arguments has genuinely defensible positions on both sides, which is what makes the format work.
One thing a tier list cannot tell you: whether the specific watch in front of you is real. The spread is deliberate: a tier list is only fun when F tier is genuinely contested.
Is there a correct tier list?
No, and anyone who says otherwise is ranking by different criteria than you. Finishing, in-house movements, heritage, resale, value for money and design all produce different orders. The nearest thing to consensus: Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and A. Lange & Söhne near the top of any list, Rolex either beside them or leading its own category, Grand Seiko as the perennial dark-horse S pick, and genuine chaos everywhere below B.
